Biography

Colonel Accountius received her B.S. degree from Miami University of Ohio in 1952. After basic officer training at the Medical Field Service School, Fort Sam Houston, Texas, she began her army career as a 2nd Lieutenant with a Dietetic Internship at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Her first assignment as a dietitian was for the hospital at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri, which had just reopened for the Korean War.

Her most memorable assignment was her stint as the first dietitian assigned in Vietnam. She established the food services for all of the eight existing hospitals there, which cared for both American and Vietnamese troops. By the time she left Vietnam she was responsible for 18 hospitals. She came home a Lieutenant Colonel and was awarded a Bronze Star for her service in Vietnam.

Along the way, Colonel Accountius earned a Master of Hospital Administration Degree from Baylor University, followed by a one-year residency in Health Care Administration at Letterman Army Medical Center at the Presidio of San Francisco.

The promotion to Colonel came in 1972. She served in a number of posts including Fort Sam Houston, Walter Reed, and the Office of the Surgeon General, just to name a few. Besides the Bronze Star while on active duty, she was awarded the Legion of Merit with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.

She retired from the Army in 1982 and since that time has held various posts in long-term care facilities, both military and civilian, including Surveyor for the State of Texas, nutritionist, director, consultant, as well as teacher at the University of Texas. She is still active in her chosen career, overseeing menus for a long-term health care provider for retired military personnel.
