Professor Stonefield serves on the Board of the Massachusetts Housing Finance Agency, a government "bank with a public purpose" that grants mortgage loans for affordable housing. He believes that this and other activities keep him connected to the world of legal practice and strengthen his teaching and writing in real estate finance and development. Prior to joining the faculty, he served from 1977 to 1981 as a commissioner of the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination. He has also been a managing attorney at Western Massachusetts Legal Services, has worked as a staff attorney in a prisoners' legal assistance program, and has engaged in the private practice of law. His areas of interest are real estate finance law, evidence, federal courts, and civil rights.
