James Patrick, Associate Professor of Music, received his M.F.A.
degree from Princeton University where he also served on the faculty
(1971-73). Following positions at Cornell University as Junior
Fellow in The Society for the Humanities (1974-1976) and Lecturer in
The Department of Music (1976-77) he joined the faculty at the
University at Buffalo in 1978. Patrick has taught music history
across the entire range of the undergraduate and graduate curricula
and is a jazz specialist. His publications are informed by an interdisciplinary mix of traditional concerns about sources and chronology, oral history, and discography viewed as the study of sound recordings as musical sources. He has written extensively about the music of Charlie Parker, and also about Benny Carter, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, and Bessie Smith. Patrick has served as a member of the editorial board of Journal of Jazz Studies and jazz consultant to the U.S. Department of the Interior, Educational Testing Service, numerous publishers, journals, public and private foundations, and universities. His honors include a "Grammy" awarded by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences in 1980 for Best Album Notes and the Outstanding Academic Book award for 1983-1984 from Choice magazine. |
