Ronald W. Lorensen

Ronald W. Lorensen is a partner of STS&L. He was born in Hamburg, Germany. His parents met and married in Germany, where his mother served as a translator for the Nuremburg war crimes trials. The Lorensen family later moved to Rochester, New York.

Mr. Lorensen attended Dartmouth College, where he received an A.B. (1967) and an M.B.A. (Amos Tuck School of Business Administration, 1968). From 1968 to 1971, Mr. Lorensen served as an officer in the U.S. Army. His primary duty assignment during that time was as a budget officer at the U.S. Military Academy (West Point). After leaving the Army, Mr. Lorensen entered Albany Law School, receiving his J.D. in 1974.

Mr. Lorensen spent ten years as Alaska's Deputy Attorney General, where he was responsible for virtually all facts of the legal services provided by the Department of Law to state agencies. Prior to his appointment as Deputy Attorney General in 1980, Mr. Lorensen was a partner in the Juneau office of Josephson, Trickey and Lorensen. Before that, he was an assistant attorney general for the State of Alaska, serving as counsel for the Department of Education and the Department of Labor. While with the Department of Law, he argued two cases before the Supreme Court of the United States.

Mr. Lorensen brings to the firm extensive experience in a broad variety of state and governmental issues including constitutional law, education, elections, labor relations, municipal law, public contracts, public finance, public records, and open meetings. He serves as counsel to the State of Alaska Permanent Fund Corporation. He has assisted the State of Alaska in a variety of matters and has represented both the municipalities of Haines and Klawock in litigation.

Mr. Lorensen has also represented private corporations, including oil and gas, timber, and shipping companies. Mr. Lorensen has considerable experience in negotiating and resolving complex and sensitive business disputes, and in litigating them when necessary.

Mr. Lorensen is a member of the Bartlett Regional Hospital board and is a former member of the Board of Governors of the Alaska Bar association and the Governor's Executive Clemency Review Board. He is a former director of Juneau Teen Homes, Inc. He is also the firm's contact attorney with the State Capital Law Firm Group.

Mr. Lorensen is married and has four children. In his free time he enjoys boating, fishing, whale watching, tennis, hiking, and skiing.
