E-Mails from Crewmembers

Ross Telson - 6/12/98

Hey Chief! (Senior, or Master, or whatever)

So what's the greatest former Narwhal E-div CPO (and JO mentor) doing these days? Remember me? I'm the guy who only thought he was running E-div, only to learn months later that I hadn't even seen most of my Eng-taskers because my Chief was sneaking them out of my basket, completing the work, and slipping them back to the Eng without my even knowing it! I still enjoy recounting the story to friends and associates about a truly extraordinary E-div CPO I once knew.

Any good sea stories? I have a few I'll tell you at the Decom. In summary, I left Narwhal, recruited Nukes for a year out of Dallas, TX, then rolled into Naval Postgraduate School. I foolishly allowed the detailer talk me into returning to sea (after about 4 years away) as Eng on a Boomer going into an ERP. I nearly crashed and burned during the refit, definitely got singed.

When we finally got back to sea (weeks late due to some nasty hull cracks) we set an amazing pace trying to prep simultaneously for an ORSE and NTPI (or some other inspection). By this point, I was getting about 3-4 hours horizontal time per night and starting to hear those loud popping sounds a line starts to make just before it parts-if you know what I mean!

I think it was when the XO wrote me a note asking me to reexamine my commitment that I decided I wasn't having enough fun so I tendered my resignation. I had to work off the PG school greemain before I could be set free, so the detailer sent me to Japan to be the Engineer of the USS Barbel, SS-580. That's the real sea story. See you in January! Drop a line if you find time.

Ross Telson
CDR, USN(R) - Yeah, I'm still a weekend warrior.

PS - Do you remember the time we almost electrocuted the entire division? I'll never forget!

Bryan DeBolt - 6/6/98

I'm EM1 Bryan DeBolt currently stationed aboard the USS Pennsylvania. I am recieving orders to be part of the decom crew and I'm looking for a contact point onboard the Narwhal. I'm excited for the chance be a part of the crew. I've done two SSN's (both 688s), one new con and one Trident (never again). I noted the email addresses on the page but I'm not sure which are actively part of the crew. If you could, would you point the way. Thanks

EM1 DeBolt

Dean Weeks - 6/1/98

While employed at cnsyd shop 26 (welders) I worked on your boat. Had some interesting times and exciting times during hugo. hope this finds the crew and famlies of the ssn671 well. After the close of cnsyd I was xfered to Oklahoma to work for the ARMY what a let down after having all those years (l6) with the navy, what a bummer. Take care and always come up for air..

Hey, great stuff!.

My name is Ensign Robert P. Shaw (LDO 6162). I was on the forces finest from 1984 - 1987 (TMSA - TM2 SS ) . I have some interesting stories about running aground in Palma, Spain and working for the "Sturgeon Strangler". I'm currently stationed onboard the USS SOUTH CAROLINA as the Gunnery Officer (Skimmer puke!) Hope to hear from you.

Mike Cegelski - 5/5/98

Dear Jack

I served on Narwhal from July 85 till August 88 when I left the navy.I really like your page. Seeing the names of some of my old shipmates really brings back some great memories. My E-mail stephmike@stratos.net Please add me to your list. once again great great page.

Robert Montgomery - 4/23/98

Hi Jack;

I don't know you but I certainly enjoyed the Narwhal web site.

I got a card from Steve Stone about 2 years ago asking for a response, and I always meant to respond, but .... oh well, what good is and excuse anyway.

Today I finally discovered the Narwhal web site, not that it was hard to find.

I'm not a plankowner on the Narwhal, but I was an RO (ET2) on the commissioning crew in 1979. I was on the Narwhal from 1969 to 1970 during it's initial sea trials. There's been a lot of water over the focsle since then. I currently reside in Cleveland Ohio with my wife, my son (15) and my daughter (12) (I got a late start).

I was entertained by the stories recounted by Chuck Mayer who was also on the Narwhal at that time. I worked with Chuck at CIE here in Cleveland for awhile, but lost touch.

Yes, I remember Junior Barnes (or was that Teddy Four?) riding his motorcycle into the briar bush in St. Croix. On that same trip I slid off the road on a corner. We had a great time (except for sliding off the road).

Has anyone heard from Bill Dudgeon? I ran into him when he lived near here in Mentor back in '74. The last I heard he got a job with Hartford Steam Boiler and moved somewhere near Hartford CT.

Yes, I remember GW Smith's flaming orange hair. He beat Dennis Rodman by quite a few years.

I appreciate the hard work that you (and others) have put into this site. Although I can still remember that I didn't like service in the Navy (in general), I enjoyed the camaraderie and had a lot of good times. And I get some strange and explicable pleasure out of hearing about my old shipmates and ship. So this is what Nostalgia is.

My home e-mail is RQMonty@worldnet.att.net.

Gary Semler - 4/22/98

Hey Jack,

Gary Semler here checking in. I saw Jon Salisbury mentioning my name in his recent e-mail and now that I am getting my feet wet on this super highway thought I better get signed up. I was an S5G plankowner 64-67, Narwhal plankowner 67-72, and also recognize many later Narwhal crewmembers names from my Shift Test Engineer years in Chas Nav Shipyard. I worked on both overhauls and all but one SRA and from 79-93 and generated many Narwhal friends from those days. I am particularly familiar with a lot of the first overhaul guys like yourself. The after shift meetings at the KaLu and Dizzy Lizzies helped us all get through some tough testing programs. Won't bore you any more, but just wanted to say Hey (as we are known to do here in SC).

Bill Judd - 4/11/98

I know I could have communicated much sooner, but inertia (sounds better than procrastination) is a powerful force.

I enjoyed reviewing the Narwhal website and reading the Tusk. The emails from shipmates of the past helped to reconnect names, faces, and places.

I was XO from Sep 82 to Jun85. Narwhal highlights during that period were the Med Run, BQQ5C installation, the infamous northern trip(they were probably all infamous), the steam generator inspection, and our Bermuda liberty trip.

Following my tour on SSN 671, I went to PCO training and then to San Diego where I took command of USS Haddo(SSN604) from Feb 86 to Oct 88. Back to school(a nuke never stops learning) at the Naval War College in Newport, RI. Having escaped a Washington tour, I was overdue and spent three+ years at Navy Recruiting Command headquarters as manager of the NUPOC and other officer recruiting programs.

While on this shore tour, I started a Masters program for teacher certification. I retired in the fall of 1993, did my student teaching, and then got a job as a teacher. I have been teaching at a private school in Northern Virginia for the past four years, first as the middle school science teacher and now as the computer technology specialist. Teaching 12 year olds is a lot like teaching nukes, except you only have to tell them stuff once(joke). Seriously the kids are a challenge, but teaching is a great reward.

Since Norfolk is relatively close to Falls Church, I hope to be able to get to the decom in Jan 99. My thanks to you all for keeping the history, heritage, and traditions of the Narwhal alive.

Oogah! Oogah

CDR Bill Judd, USN retired

Pls add my address to your list of Nar-vets, "Dubnansky.richard@hq.navy.mil". I have just transferred off the NARWHAL and am currently the flag aide to N87

Thanks - LT Richard Dubnansky

Hershel Kreis - 3/20/98

Jack,

I just wanted to add my 2 cents here.....I was on Narwhal in Charleston, but left after having a run in with LCDR Judd. Went to the surface fleet after that (not my choice, of course). Spent 83-85 on her and was really sorry to hear that she will be decommissioned next year.

I had some good times on the boat until I screwed up. I still remember old Stu Kelley from Nuke Power school and back in the engine room. I do plan on attending a few of the activities during decommissioning as I live fairly close in Williamsburg.

Thanks for the web page and the memories.

Hershel

Paul Patterson - 3/18/98

Hey Smilin' Jack...

I see that you still have not shaved that beard off......

I was on the Narwhal from Dec 1981 to Apr 1985...... the god years following the refueling in Charleston...

I have down loaded the address list and have contacted a few of the guys I sailed with (you were one of them).

I am still (yeah still) in the Navy.. soon to retire. Currently at RADCON in Kingsbay Ga.

I had a follow on tour on the Tullibee (oh My God) after the Narwhal, taught ETMS at Subscol ( probably scare some of those old RO's) and then built the Maryland (SSBN 738).

I hope to see you and the others at the decom next year....

Steve Searight - 3/12/98

Jack,

While rumaging around in some of my "mementos" from my Narwhal days, I ran across a copy of the menu for the first meal served on board on February 10, 1969. On the menu were the names of crew members that I did not see on your list. They are:

Lt. J. G. Lessa, SC, USN (Supply Officer)
W. E. Weber, CS1(SS), Commissarymen
A. D. Hessenius, CS2(SS), Commissarymen
E. J. Kent, CS3(SU), Commissarymen
B. T. Macapugay, SD2(SS), Steward
R. J. McKinley, TN(SU), Steward

Don't know where these shipmates are currently, but maybe someone else knows their current status and whereabouts.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Steve Searight

Bryan Manna - 3/09/98

Greetings to all steely eyed killers of the deep from the Narfish. I served in the IC division from '82 to '84. I have to admit I am pleasantly surprised the Narwhal has a site. Thanks Chief Semelsberger.

I found a few ghosts from the past on the users list and have already E-mailed them. I have a great deal of memories from my time on Narwhal, like the time Captain Sullivan blew the sanitary tank on himself, Narburgers, the DOP, and the ever popular field-day. Seeing the site has really brought these and other memories back. It has been 14 years, but sometimes it seems like only yesterday that we watched 101 Dalmatians at least 101 times on a Med-run.

I am living in Denver now, you know... super bowl champs (finally), and I have yet to run into another bubble-head. You remember the story about the anchor and walking inland. Well, I guess thats what I did.

There was truly a sense of camaraderie on the Narwhal that I have never experienced since then. You can be sure I will be checking the site on a regular basis.

Best Regards,

Bryan Manna IC1(SS)

Tom Lewis - 3/08/98

Hey Jack

My name is Tom Lewis served on board the good Narfish from 1984 to 1988. I read a few notes from old shipmates I will be E-Mailing them.Best memory or nightmare (depending on how you would look at it) was when she broke her anchor chain in a storm off the Medterraining coast of Spain. The term HITTING THE BEACH had a whole new meaning. Later Tom Lewis (FTG1)

Bill Paroli - 3/05/98

Hi Fellow Shipmates,

I just received the latest TUSK and was happy to hear that we were so organized. Many thanks to Steve, Mark, and the others.

Recently, I spoke to my Congressman, Jerry Solomon, (R, C) New York, the Chairman of the House Rules Committee. I told him of our desire to have the next fast attack boat named Narwhal. He told me that he would like to see it happen too and to have us all write to him and others, and flood them with our request.

Jerry's address is:
Congressman Gerald B. Solomon

This guy is an ex-marine and is very supportive of the military and veterans. Let's give him a shout.

Hope to see you all in January, '99.

Jon Salisbury - 3/04/98

Jack,

Congratulations on the Narwhal website. It's great! I just learned of it from the latest newsletter (another great form of communication). I was one of the original 60 picked for the S5G project in '64 and then one of the first 15 that went to the barge at Electric Boat in '67. (I say to the barge because that's where we stayed until the Narwhal was fit for occupation). Now for a second time we watched as our home took shape and soon began all the testing prior to sea trials. Then, on to sea trials, sound trials and Admiral Rickover's show-off runs to other admirals. We were the boat of the future at that time. The normal fast attack was running 33 million a clip, but we were up to 133 million and climbing. One story that comes to mind - I was the ERS one run and the EOOW asked me to take his watch so he could relieve himself in the engine room head. As he sat in the head, he heard on the 2MC, "Reactor Fast Insertion" and Rig Ship for Reduced Power". You've never seen a person return to the maneuvering area so rapidly. Actually, the Chief Engineer - Frank Butterworth, Captain Matson and Admiral Rickover had decided to show off for other passengers. The normal way to start the drill was to pull the fuses on the aux panel. The way the maneuvering area is laid out, we couldn't see them coming and the Chief Engineer didn't know that I had the watch. You should have seen the look on his face when he saw me. As the dignitaries watched myself, the Electric Plant, Steam Plant and Reactor Operators respond, as we had so many times before, it just reinforced how well we were all trained. The Admiral was happy - and that's what counted.

A second and last story for now - I think I can lay claim to being at least the first if not the only person ever to stand a watch in the engine room and not be a member of the crew. Three weeks or maybe more before the ship was to leave on it's first patrol in July '70, I was transferred to SUBDEVGRP 2, as I was due to get out of the Navy in July '70. Having spent 6 years of my 11 year Navy life with S5G and Narwhal, I decided to see what it was like to stay on the pier as the ship headed out to sea. Chief Gary Semler had the ERS watch and was bringing in steam in preparation to get under way. The topside watch let me on board and I relieved Gary so he could go topside and see his wife Ann one more time. I finished helping light off the engine room (you know, I don't think I had a film badge) and the EOOW said "I think they are removing the gang plank" - I immediately stuck my head out the ER hatch to check - Gary came back aboard and I went to the pier. A huge wave of emotion swept over me as that sleek black vessel left me behind on the pier. After all those years, that part of my life had come to an end.

I can think of other stories, such as foot long lizards in Old San Juan and lobster pots tangled in our screw, but, another time. Please keep me informed about the Decommissioning Ceremonies. My wife, Paulette and I would like to attend. Paulette was also a part of the undertaking from the beginning. Long live the name USS NARWHAL!!

Jack

Funny how things happen....I got a call about a year ago from Steve Stone telling me he was doing some research on ex-narwhal sailors. He had heard from Rick Leonard about me and that I was from Oregon. He spent some time with the on-line phone directory and called me. What a surprise!

About a month ago, I purchased a computer and got on-line....finally joined. Since then I've received E mails from Rick, Steve, as all of us have, and Chuck Mayer, the OLD ET that brought the Narwhal critical. Last Thanksgiving, out of nowhere, I also received a call from Duane Bowers, an E ganger I served with.

In getting connected, and reading the Narwhal Home Page, I see several names I recognize: Dennis Alexander was E Div officer while I was a lowly EM2 (SS/DV). Sizemore and Simler, along with Joel Sanda were Chiefs. Junior Barnes was an RO, George Smith made Warrant, but was still MM 1(SS), TAZ was a Torpedoman, and Parker and Dixon were Sonar Girls, 2nd class. Tracy Vanoy, Steve Elliot, Jake the Snake Jacobi, Ron Lamb, Bruce Mijka, Bill Dudgeon, Ted Faure, Mel Shannon, were all folks I enjoyed working with.

I was onboard from 1970 until 1972, transferring from the Truxtun DLG (N) 35, a skimmer in Viet Nam. What a relief! Of course, got out and now managing generation resources for a utility in Oregon. At lease now I don't have to leave home to enjoy working in power plants.

I'll write again and recall some of the stories we had on some of the first cruises, like Tracy Vannoy eating Frito Bean Dip and drinking his own special home made beer just before leaving home port. Once we submerged, he would go to the ELT lab in engines aft, let one rip at the ventilation air intakes, and share it with all of us in the engine room. What a nice guy.

Thanks for keeping up the home page...Its great to read about all the old shipmates.

Eric Gilmer - 3/03/98

Hi Jack,

Long time since the old Alexander Frog and the Narwhal. Thought I would drop you a line and give you my e-mail for the list.

I went into SpecWar when I joined the reserves and kind of lost track of the submarine troops. Anyway I retired from the USNR in January 97 as a LCDR (LDO) which is proof that you should never drink and write at the same time. I found out I had made QMCM two days after I was picked up for LDO.

I hear from Steve Hastings from time-to-time and used to run into Jerry Sullivan until he retired. Guess we are all getting old!

You guys have done a great job with the Narwhal home page. Let me know what is planned for the decom and I'll try to get up. I live in Atlanta so it should be easy to catch a quick flight.

Ronnie Rochelle - 3/03/98

Hi Jack,

I wonder if you remember me. I retired from the Navy November 30, 1992 as QMCM(SS) Rot'n Ronnie Rochelle. I spent 5 years on the Narwhal during the, what we call, best years, 1977 - 1982. We won three battle "E" along with the three "meat ball" flags and various NAMs and Enginneering and Supply "E"s. In '79 I made chief along with 6 others. I think we were 100% that year in making chief, all who went up for chief make it.

Thank You for The Narwhal Tusk newsletter. It brings back alot of good memories.

I am a Computer Specialist for the Department of Veterans Affairs in Hartford, CT. After the Navy I went back to school and obtained CNE for Novell. I received my CNE on Friday was hired on Monday by the VA and never saw a Novell system.. We have Wang, Microsoft NT 3.51 and various other small WANs and LANs plus 100 end users. My three oldest kids have graduated from college and are working on their Masters. My oldest dauther graduated from Salve Regina University in Newport, RI in 1990 and is a Nurse Manager at Yale Hospital. She is working on her Masters. The Next one is Jason who graduated from Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ and is working for State Street Bank in Boston, MA. He is also working on his Masters. The next on is Timmy who graduated from Salve Regina University and will graduated from Salve Regina Univeristy with a Master this summer. I have a younger dauther, Kristyn, who is in the 10th grade at East Lyme High School. I built a nice 4 bedroom colonial 3 miles from the ocean in East Lyme, CT. So you see life is GOOD.

I just visited the WEB page and really like it. I would like to be at the Decomm in '99 so please add me to the list...

My E-Mail is ARMRROCH@VBA.VA.GOV..

Chuck Haataja- 2/23/98

I was a Nuc Machinist Mate on the Boat from July 1970 to Feb 1974. It was great to see the Web sites, on the NARWHAL. I'm glad someone is taking the time to provide this information.
I was on the Boat for the first Northern Run, and several more after that. We sure spent a lot of time at sea, back then. I was glad to get out of the NAVY, but there were a lot of good times and I still remember many of the Crew, I served with.
I'm still in the Nuclear Business. I left one of the best Subs in the NAVY to join the staff of one of the best Nuclear Plants in the Nation, The KEWAUNEE Nuclear Plant, located in Northeast Wisconsin. I do plan on attending the Decommisioning party in Jan. 1999. Hope to see my "old" Shipmates.

Steven Searight - 2/19/98

Jack,

Please add my name to your list of past crewmembers. I was a plank owner in '68-'69. The Narwhal was my first boat out of sub school and I was LPO of the deck gang prior to leaving for the Henry L. Stimpson (SSBN 655). I have a lot of fond memories from my time aboard the Narwhal like our first weapons tests in St. Croix where we opened the bar at 6:00 in the morning.

Thanks for the page.

Hello,

I am the webmaster for Submarine Suadron Support Unit Norfolk, I am looking for a picture of the Narwhal to use on our web page and I would like to use on of yours. If you don't mind my using the photo please mail me back with permission.

On a less formal note I like your page it is set up very well and I enjoyed finding it. Most of the links I found to a Narwhal page were dead links and I was about to give up on finding your site.

Rob Spading - 1/28/98

Jack,

Thanks for the reply. I did know Jim Matthews and he was the bull nuke when I got on board. In fact when I got my dolphins he presented me with a pair that someone had given him years before. It meant alot to me. After he left, I lost touch with him. Do you know where he is now?

I can't say I really like it here in NJ, but it's good work and good pay. As soon as I get the chance to move back to Idaho or the surrounding area...I'll be gone. The Derby is definitely still open and still serving cold ones... I am trying to locate some more guys who are not in the Narpage database....that I can remember. Bill Arnold, Jim Renner, Matt Drain and a few others. I just informed Rick White about the page and he will probably contact you guys. He was an ELT on the boat from ~86-89 and he is currently working at Salem as an NEO (Aux Operator type).

I'll contact you guys if I can locate any of them.

Thanks,
Rob Spading

Terry Carby - 1/26/98

Jack

I was checking out the Narwhal site and saw that my e-mail address is wrong. It should be tcarby@bellsouth.net. Not com.

Maybe thats why I'm not getting any e-mail. I probably gave it to you wrong.

Thanks, Terry Carby

Jack,

Great page -- offering the chance to remember the good times. I was on the Tuskfish from 1988-1991as ELT. Went back out to Idaho, NPTU and then quit the Navy in 1994. Reading the page really brought back some memories and reminded me of some long lost friends. I am in contact with William (Billy) Arnold still and will let him know about the page. For all my old friends I am living in NJ working at the Salem Generating Station(SRO in training). Still going nuclear and sometimes wondering why. Really miss the West and would go back in a heartbeat. Leo...you still with APS??? Want to say hi to Mike A. (where are you?), LEO (got that Yenko yet?), Dennis C. (made Chief yet?), Mike D. (don't make me hurt you), Stevo Wish (man can he snore)......and many many more. Does anyone know where Matt Drain is? You can reach me at:

RSpading@PSEG.com --Work
rspading@delanet.com --Home

or I'm building a website at:
http://www.hotrodgarage.com

will link the Nar-page when my links page is up and running.

Thanks,
Rob Spading

Hey there kizmet,

Got an message from pinhead walker, told me to see some of the stories ex-671ers are sending in. Interesting to see some of the characters that are still slithering across the face of the earth (myself included...). I did run into Martinez at Maine Yankee, and it was about 10 years ago. I had just started with Yankee (now Duke Engineering), and was trying to maintain some semblance of respectfulness....until that loudmouthed nitwit (only joking ha-ha-ha) began with the story how I was chasing Pogy Pierce down the hallway in the barracks with a good 7" turd in my hand (it really is a longer story....that shouldn't be posted.....) in any event McDermott made the mistake of opening his door when he heard Pogy screaming "Jeathus Christh John Henry, get rid of that thing"....I dumped it the public crapper, which was being used at the time by some poor Phillipino that had no idea why some guy would acutally "dump" a fresh turd in an occupied shitter...had to be there.

All is well in New England....Yankee was bought by Duke Engineering & Services at the end of '97. No changes so far, still spending lots of time at Maine Yankee.

Gotta Go

keep in touch

David Marshall - 1/20/98

I was onboard from June 1992 until March 1993. I had just transfered from recuiting duty and had been to sea two or three times. When just after Pres. Clinton was sworn in I was offered a bonus to get out. So I took it. Narwhal was just coming out of sea trials.

I was a Quartermaster 1st class.

Please include me on the Crewmember Internet Address list.

Thank You. And Thank you for providing a great page.

Just sending you my new email address for your crew list. Enjoying your website. I've rec'd email from Steve Homic and Wolf via the Narwhal web site. But I never heard back from Homic. Maybe ther's a slight mistake in it. Well, take it easy.

Ron Sullinger - 1/15/98

Jack

Another lost soul checking in. My name is Ron Sullinger. I was an ET (forward puke type) on the ole girl from 1972 to 1976 with the likes of Dennis Schilling, John Mcquown, Earl Juday, Bob Nartoweicz (early on), Larry Schafer, Alan Hauck, Ernie Pooler, Ray Bushey, Mike Mower, Wolf Moritz, Jim Pierotti and Garry Elmer (before they went Boomer), Jack Burton, Clarence (George) Rabidueau and many others on the address list that I recognize from that time period.

I currently live in the California Central Valley near Fresno and work in Fremont (South Bay Area) with my wife, two children, dogs, parrots and cats. I moved to this area after I got out in 1978 and spent 16 years working for companies associated with submarine ESM equipment. I am now working in the Semiconductor Industry.

Please add me to the Address list:

My Primary Address is: CUZMBLONDAD@AOL.com
but I also can be reached through SULLIRO@INREACH.com or ron.sullinger@lamrc.com

Thanks and smooth sailing.

Glenn Johnson - 1/15/98

Hello, My name is Glenn Johnson, I was onboard Narwhal 1982 - 1986. I have met a couple of old crew members that told me about the web page and I wanted to check in. My email address is gwjohnso@bellsouth.net, or gwjohnso@ingr.com. I would like for anyone recognizing my name to reply, and to be updated on reunions and whatnot. I was an ET/SINS Tech..

Ron Sullinger - 1/2/98

I was a forward ET with the likes of Bob Nartowicz, Dennis Schilling, Earl Juday, Alan Hauck and yes Larry Schafer. However I probably spent most of my time with the FT's and ST's (better drinkers), especially FT's Jim Pierottin and Garry Elmer (before they defected to the BOOMERS) and ST's Ernie Pooler and Ray Bushey. I guess I should also add YN1 Clarence "George" Rabideaux and before I got off RM1 jerry Callahan.

I left Narwahl and went to SSEP to teach and got out in 1978. Since then, I worked for a small simulation company (electronic warfare), then spent twelve years working for the US Military division or ARGOSystems (ESM Systems) including retrofit systems on 594 and 637 class as well as the Royal Austrailian Submarine Force.

I currently work for LAM Research in the SEMI CONDUCTOR Industry in Fremont California.

Please add me to your lists.

I have the following E-mail Addresses:

Sulliro@InReach.com
CuzmBLndad@AOL.com
Sulliro@Lamrc.com

Thanks and keep the faith
