Biography

COL Cathy J. Johnson was born in Plainfield, New Jersey. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Alfred University, Alfred, New York, a Master of Science Degree in Nursing from Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, and a Master of Healthcare Administration Degree from the U.S. Army-Baylor University Graduate Program, San Antonio, Texas. She was commissioned in 1976 and was assigned as a staff nurse, Medical-Surgical Unit, Irwin Army Hospital, Fort Riley, Kansas. She then attended the Army’s Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Program, Eisenhower Army Medical Center, Fort Gordon, Georgia and was assigned as a psychiatric nurse and Clinical Nurse Specialist. COL Johnson entered the US Army Reserves in 1983 and served as the Assistant Chief Nurse for the 361st EVAC Hospital, Folsom, Pennsylvania until returning to active duty in 1989. Prior to returning to active duty, COL Johnson served as Director of Nursing at Hampton Hospital, Westhampton, New Jersey. COL Johnson’s military assignments since 1989 include: Clinical Nurse Specialist and Chief of Nursing Education and Training at Moncrief Army Community Hospital, Fort Jackson, South Carolina; Program Director of the Psychiatric Specialist Course, AMEDD Center and School, Fort Sam Houston, Texas; and Deputy Commander for Nursing at US Army MEDDAC-Heidelberg, Germany.

COL Johnson has completed Command and General Staff College. She is a graduate of the US Army-Baylor University Healthcare Administration Program.

COL Johnson’s awards and decorations include: the Meritorious Service Medal (3 OLC), Army Commendation Medal (2 OLC), Army Achievement Medal (3 OLC), and the Order of Military Medical Merit.

She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau, International Honor Society for Nurses and is a Diplomate in the American College of Healthcare Executives. She is certified by the American Nurses’ Credentialing Center in Advanced Nursing Administration and as a Clinical Nurse Specialist, Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing.
