Biography
Colonel Henry 0. Tuell III assumed command of the United States Army Garrison, Fort Detrick on
29 August 1995. This command followed his assignment as Chief of Staff, United States Army
Medical Command, Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Colonel Tuell's career highlights include: Chief,
Medical Service Corps Branch, Health Services Division, Directorate of Officer Personnel
Management, U.S. Total Army Personnel Command, Alexandria, Virginia; Chief, Manpower Division,
Directorate of Health Care Operations, Office of The Surgeon General, Falls Church, Virginia;
Assistant to the Chief, Medical Service Corps, Office of The Surgeon General, Washington, D.C.;
Commander, 56th Medical Battalion, Fort Ord, California; Chief, Command and Field Branch, Army
Medical Department Personnel Support Agency, Washington, D.C. Colonel Tuell served three
separate assignments at Fort Carson, Colorado, as Commander, 571st Medical Detachment and
Chief, Clinical Support Division and Administrative Resident, U.S. Army Medical Department
Activity. Colonel Tuell served overseas as Commander and Maintenance Officer, 63d Medical
Detachment, Landstuhl, Germany. After a tour in Vietnam as Medical Evacuation Platoon Leader,
1st Cavalry Division, he became Operations Officer, Brooke Army Medical Center Flight
Detachment, Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Colonel Tuell earned a bachelor of science in
microbiology at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, Oklahoma, and was commissioned a Second
Lieutenant in the Medical Service Corps. He holds a master of science in psychological
counseling, Ball State University Muncie, Indiana, and a master of hospital administration,
Baylor University Waco, Texas. He is a graduate of the United States Army Command and General
Staff College and Industrial College of the Armed Forces.
His awards and decorations include The Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross with five Oak Leaf Clusters, the Soldier's Medal, the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, the Meritorious
Service Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, the Air Medal and the Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters. He is a Master Aviator.
