I had the good fortune to be sponsored by the AMEDD to obtain the MHA through the Baylor program and the Dr.PH. from the University of Texas School of Public Health, at the Health Science Center, Houston during my military career. As a result of this sponsorship through the AMEDD, I was well-equipped to serve in AMEDD field units as well as at fixed facilities throughout the world. Additionally, the training obtained, courtesy of the AMEDD, has provided me with the opportunity and pleasure to serve our country at the highest level of government, to include a Presidential appointment as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs during the first Bush administration.
Dr. Jack O. Lanier, Dr.PH., FACHE, was appointed Professor and Chairman of Preventive Medicine and Community Health, Virginia Commonwealth University, Medical College of Virginia Campus, December 1992. He retired as Chairman August 21. 2001.
Dr. Lanier was appointed as Associate Vice President for Health Sciences for Public Health, Virginia Commonwealth University, Medical College of Virginia Campus July 1, 1997.
Before joining VCU/MCV, he served as the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs for three years reporting directly to Dick Cheney, Secretary of Defense.
Dr. Lanier previously served as Senior Vice President for Corporate and Community Development of the Greater Southeast Healthcare System in Washington, D.C. Assuming this position in 1985, he was responsible for corporate planning, policy and program development as well as marketing, resource and business development in a not-for-profit health care system, involving 15 subsidiaries. From 1981-85, Dr. Lanier served as Vice President of the American College of Healthcare Executives in Chicago, Illinois. He has also served as Director and Professor of the Army-Baylor University Graduate Program in Health Care Administration at the Academy of Health Sciences, Fort Sam Houston, Texas, from 1977-81.
A colonel in the Army Medical Department, Dr. Lanier served in a number of key military medical positions, including administrative, management and command posts at U.S. Army Hospitals in Regensburg and Munich, Germany, South Vietnam; Fort Sam Houston, Texas; and the U.S. Military Academy Hospital at West Point, New York. He also served for two years as the Congressional Liaison Officer in the Office of the Army Surgeon General, Washington, D.C., from 1966 to 1968.
Dr. Lanier received his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from North Carolina A and T State University and later completed graduate work in Public Administration at George Washington University in 1968. His education also includes a Master of Hospital Administration degree from Baylor University (1970) and a Doctor of Public Health degree (Dr.PH.) from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston School of Public Health.
Since joining VCU/MCV in 1992, Dr. Lanier was appointed by the Virginia Governor to serve on the Virginia State Planning Board. He also serves as a member of the Sisters of Mercy Health System Board of Directors (St. Louis, Missouri); a member of the Wheaton Franciscan Board of Directors (Wheaton, Illinois); the Richmond City Hospital Authority; and the National Board of Directors of the Association of Teachers of Preventive Medicine (ATPM), Washington, D.C.
